Can Corona be the new Grinch that steal the most expected holiday on the earth? It might, and it is worse than the last year. With the increasing demand after the vaccination and the frustration in the crowds around the world, the possibility of Corona disruption in supply chain relations will be higher.
There are many strains from materials, to energy to whole logistics nightmares. This destroyer of holiday has many tricks up in its sleeves. Increased demand after long time inside, revenge shopping, changed buying patterns increasing existence of online shopping in our lives, no more time to lose to what you want to get!
Bankrupt material suppliers, this wrecker of the worlds first wreck havoc on many businesses which are out of work now and some of them are valuable suppliers for whole markets, take acrylic yarn suppliers in Turkey in case. There were 3-4 major players for whole market and 1 of them has lost their grip because of Corona and the whole supply chain disrupted, squeezed whole manufacturers to shrunk supplier pool.
Domino effect as a forceful way of transition, as the Newton put up, every action has a reaction as we have altogether experienced in last 2 full years now. Demand strain while the lock downs put many shipping companies out of work, close to bankruptcy and this had many big cans of transportation, some calls containers ships, end up in either Bangladesh or Turkey or China to be dismantled. Same story as the material suppliers but thankfully far less drama. Alas, the result is same as before, decreased capacity. That drop in capacity and increased demand for goods end up transportation fees that are closing up to air way cargo prices. With a recent wake-up call from our beloved UPS agent we forcefully realized we are now in competition with sea shippers that are trying to make their ends meet. So one domino has knocked over the other and we are now in a new world order with closing gap between sea and air freights and exponential increase in both prices and transit times. If you ever unlucky enough to choose one of the cheaper options courier companies offered, your shipment probably end up either in Köln or Lille in this season with waiting times close to infinity. Those boxes would be more useful if the Grinch steals them compared to chilling in a warehouse in Europe with disappointed customers expecting to get their custom socks, beanies, scarves and hoodies.
All the problems experienced during the pandemic period showed us that only brands that can keep up with rapid change can survive. Every problem, from the lack of raw materials to the explosions in demand, from the increase in energy prices to transportation, caused the brands to confront themselves.
